MASO 2026 Orthodontic Resident Case Competition Guidelines
​The Mid-Atlantic Society of Orthodontists (MASO) invites orthodontic residents to submit ABO-quality cases for presentation at the MASO Annual Session in September 2026.

​Eligibility and Submission Requirements
  • Each orthodontic residency program may submit a maximum of two (2) cases.
  • Cases must meet ABO-quality standards and have a Discrepancy Index (DI) greater than 20.
  • The resident presenter must be the primary treating resident and must be present at the MASO Annual Session to present the case.
  • All program, institution, faculty, and resident identifiers must be removed from the submission materials. Failure to de-identify the case will result in disqualification.

Case Selection Criteria
Cases will be evaluated using the following criteria, including:
  • Uniqueness and complexity of the malocclusion and treatment plan
  • Quality and clarity of the case write-up
  • Excellence of treatment outcomes and finishing
  • Overall presentation quality and documentation

Judging and Awards
  • Cases will be evaluated by a panel of three (3) judges.
  • In addition, MASO members attending the Annual Session will have an opportunity to vote.
  • Three winners will be selected and recognized during the meeting.

+Resident reception and lecture

All MASO residents and orthodontists 1 – 4 years out are invited to attend this sponsored reception and lecture. MASO residents are required to attend (sign in required) to receive a travel stipend from MASO.

Lecture Topic: Start Smart: Financial and Ownership Strategies for New Doctors

​MASO is pleased to announce that it will again give a total of $600 in stipends to current residents in the MASO region to cover registration and travel expenses to the Annual Session and to the Spring CE. The MASO Board of Directors approved a new policy for 2026 that residents are eligible for a $150 stipend for attending the Spring CE meeting, and a $450 travel stipend for attending the Annual Session.

To receive the stipends, residents must:

• Be an AAO member in good standing
• Be a resident enrolled in a MASO region residency program;
• Attend the Spring CE meeting for the $150 stipend;
• Attend the Annual Session for the $450 stipend, and attend the business meeting on Saturday, attend all scientific sessions on Friday and Saturday, attend the Resident Reception on Thursday, and stay overnight at the MASO host hotel in the MASO room block at least one night during the conference. The 2026 conference is from September 17 – 19 at Caesars AC in Atlantic City, NJ.

Residents do not have to attend the Spring CE to be eligible to receive the $450 Annual Session stipend, but are encouraged to attend both meetings.

EXCEPTION: The exception to the new policy are residents from Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands who will be eligible for a $600 travel stipend to the Annual Session, provided they meet the other stipulations above.
Universities in the MASO region include: University of Maryland, UMDNJ Rutgers, University of Pennsylvania, Temple University, Howard University, Albert Einstein Medical Center, Washington Hospital Center, University of Puerto Rico and CTOR Academy.
